McLaren Construction Group are pleased to announce the completion of British Land’s new £84m retail outlet in Fareham which opened to the public on Thursday 23rd May.

The construction of the 320,000 sq ft development began in January 2012 with the demolition of the existing centre and has been completed to a high standard boasting exceptional design features, contemporary shop units with dramatic double and triple height glazing. The design uses natural materials including high quality European oak panels and incorporates extensive energy efficient and sustainability features.

During construction 98% of waste from the site’s previous development was diverted from landfill and 90% of it was re-used for the new scheme. These sustainable methods of construction used led to the development to being awarded a ‘BREEAM excellent’ rating.

The development comprises 56 shops and is proving to be a great success as it is already 91% pre-let by brands such as Marks and Spencer, Tescos, Topshop, and River Island to name a few. Whiteley also features The Treehouse, a pop-up event and shopping space which is unique in the UK and will be an incubator for new retailers and enable new concepts to be trialled.

Phil Pringle, Managing Director, McLaren Construction said: “We are delighted to announce the completion of another successful project with British Land. A BREEAM excellent rating is a great achievement and testament to our team’s dedication to providing low carbon solutions during the construction process.”

A huge congratulations to the Tottenham site lads who go by the name of the ‘McLaren Cavaliers’ involving David Ross, Joe Bellinger, Darren Hegarty, Rob Tempest and James Randlesome, who completed a charity bike ride from London to Paris for the Kith and Kids charity in Pretoria Road, Tottenham. Jerome Kim, friend and photographer, also rode alongside the McLaren Cavaliers in support of Kith and Kids.

The McLaren Cavaliers started from White Hart Lane stadium on Friday 24th May and cycled down to Newhaven on the south coast in the pouring rain. From there they took a ferry to Dieppe in France, travelled through the north of France to Gourney-en-Bray and then on to Paris.

The team have raised £3,031 so far therefore have gone beyond their target of £3000. KSS Diamond Drilling raised the most money and also won a signed THFC football shirt.
David Ross commented “Firstly the Cavaliers would like to thank everybody who sponsored and supported us however great or small. The trip started with horrendous rain but all the sponsorship raised made every rained soaked mile worthwhile. Once in France the weather started to brighten up but I think I can speak on behalf of all the team that we were all very glad to come round the last corner and see the Arc De Triomphe. Overall the group found it hard but very enjoyable.”

The money will go toward running the charity’s summer term of weekend clubs, providing severely disabled young people and adults with the opportunity to express themselves and interact socially.

For more information and to carry on supporting the team and Kith & Kids, please visit www.justgiving.com/McLaren-Cavaliers to donate.

McLaren Construction Ltd’s approach to occupational safety and health has been recognised in an awards scheme run by the safety charity, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA).

The Gold award in the RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Awards 2013 will be presented in a ceremony at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole Hotel, at the National Exhibition Centre, on Wednesday May 15, 2013.

Dating back 57 years, the RoSPA Awards scheme is the largest and longest-running programme of its kind in the UK. It recognises commitment to accident and ill health prevention and is open to businesses and organisations of all types and sizes from across the UK and overseas. The scheme not only looks at accident records, but also entrants’ overarching health and safety management systems, including practices such as leadership and workforce involvement.

Demolition work has started at the site of the old Cardinal Pole Upper School, as the area is cleared to make way for the brand new Ickburgh special educational needs school.

Diggers moved onto the site earlier this month and demolition is expected to be complete by June 2013, when work to build the new school will begin. Pupils will move from the school’s existing building, in Ickburgh Road, Clapton, in September 2014.

The project is part of the council’s pledge to rebuild or renew every secondary and special educational needs school in the borough under its Building Schools for the Future project. The scheme is now in its final phase.

Cllr Rita Krishna, Cabinet Member for Education and Children’s Services, joined McLaren at the site to see the demolition begin. She said: “We’re now in the final stage of our Building Schools for the Future plan, which will see all of Hackney’s secondary and special educational needs schools rebuilt or renovated. The project has made a huge difference to young people in Hackney; with good quality, fit for purpose schools, pupils feel inspired and motivated.”

“I’m delighted that work is now underway and look forward to seeing the new Ickburgh School take shape.”
The new school will boast a hydrotherapy pool, sensory and therapy rooms, a library, drama and music spaces, medical facilities and a landscaped garden.

Representatives from Hackney Council, the Local Education Partnership were on hand to watch machinery tear down the top floors of the old school. When the site is clear, the new school will be constructed using cross laminated timber frame – one of the most eco-friendly building materials available. All timber and steel from old building will be recycled and concrete materials will be recycled and used for the piling matt of the new building.

McLaren has been one of the council’s key partners in the Building Schools for the Future project, working on Urswick and Thomas Fairchild schools. They are currently also working on the second phase of the New Horizon special educational needs school. The company recently won awards for the construction of Thomas Fairchild, being especially commended in the categories of considerate, environment and good neighbour. Their work at Urswick School also saw them pick up the people’s choice award at Hackney Design Awards 2012.

The team working on the Ickburgh School project are planning community engagement events including washing local residents’ cars throughout the demolition period, holding a tea party, supporting Hackney Food Bank by recycling materials and donating them to local community groups – for example, old pews to a local church.

Following their efforts last year to refurbish the Maida Hill Place community centre, the Marble Arch House team have been busy again, this time working on a local church community centre.

All Souls Clubhouse is a charity in Great Portland Street, London, which serves the local community by hosting projects to cater for local residents. Projects include a range of programmes and activities for the local youth along with a club care project, helping the elderly with day to day tasks they may struggle with.

Ten members of the McLaren team spent two days cleaning and painting areas of the church including the front entrance, a classroom and sports hall.

McLaren are working on the redevelopment of Marble Arch House, 62-64 Seymour Street in London’s West End on behalf of client, British Land. The mixed-use scheme will entail the redevelopment and refurbishments of two properties resulting in 10 high specification apartments, a seven storey office block with CAT A fit-out including retail units to be located on the ground floor.
