McLaren Construction (Midlands & North) Ltd successfully delivered a state-of-the-art Defence Fulfilment Centre (DFC) in Donnington nr Telford, as part of an £83 million investment by the Ministry of Defence.
McLaren secured the contract from Kuehne + Nagel to deliver two warehouses and a support building with a combined size of over 860,000 sq ft, about the size of 10 football pitches. The hub will store food, clothing, general, and medical supplies for the UK Armed Forces and also bring the logistics, commodities, and support services up to the standard of industry best practice. Alongside special environmental storage, the DFC’s automated storage and retrieval system will be capable of picking more than 1000 items an hour.
The construction works consisted mezzanine floors, a four-hour firewall, racking installation, a 5,000 sq ft amenity building and two gatehouses. McLaren also developed the infrastructure around the site as part of the contract, upgrading existing roads to ensure they are capable of handling the increased volume of traffic.
The scheme achieved a BREEAM ‘Very Good’ rating.
