The Priory Square building in the University of Brighton’s Hastings Campus provides the university with world-class teaching space, an additional lecture theatre and a new home for its student services and students union.
Following partial demolition of the existing University of Brighton building in Hastings, McLaren was appointed to construct a new £7.5m development. To create the new teaching premises, the vacant upper floors of the existing building were renovated and an extension to the existing building to form three sides around a newly formed central atrium was developed in place of the demolished rear façade.
By incorporating a suite of laboratories and teaching areas geared towards nursing courses and new science degrees, the new facility has enabled the expansion of University College Hospital (UCH) courses, as well as the student population.
The new six-floor, 3,770 square metre University Centre building features a main entrance from the town’s recently created Priory Square. It also encloses the public space via an impressive civic façade on the south side, complementing the One Priory Square offices on the north side and the new restaurant facility to the east.
