One idea we were very keen to introduce was an initiative to educate the workforce on the various forms of male cancers. Every year, over 50,000 men in the UK will be diagnosed with prostate, testicular and penile cancer. Sadly, these numbers are increasing.

We wanted to actively promote the benefits of early detection and encourage workers to visit their GP should they detect any of the known signs or symptoms. Speakers from Prostate Cancer UK and Orchid were invited to Sloane Gardens, Intu Lakeside, Tiger Way and BMW Swindon to deliver talks to the workforce. These talks were very well-received by the 70-odd people who attended as some were completely oblivious and had no idea that prostate cancer even existed in men.

General feedback received include:

  • ‘I found it interesting’
  • ‘Talk was very appropriate and highlighted how serious this topic is in men’
  • ‘It highlighted things I was never aware of’
  • ‘Was worth the visit’

Those who attended the Orchid sessions were especially complimentary about their presentation:

  • ‘Very well-presented seminar’
  • ‘The props were very helpful’
  • ‘It is a good idea to check yourself regularly using the techniques taught’
  • ‘He made the talk very relaxed and got us involved’
  • ‘I’ve learned something today’
