McLaren Construction celebrated a traditional topping out ceremony at Dulwich College Laboratory on 10 July, marking placement of the last piece of steel.
Dulwich College is a two phased project with the construction of the building arranged over three floors, constructed of reinforced concrete frame on piled foundations. The works will include an all new mechanical, electrical and public health installations. The building will be covered in bespoke feature concrete, terracotta and timber cladding systems with glazed roof elements. The works will also include two energy boreholes and an open loop ground source cooling system.
Simon Yiend, Chief Operating Officer commented: “We are delighted to have reached this significant milestone. The Laboratory is the college’s biggest single investment since the construction of the iconic Barry Buildings in 1869 and we are confident it will benefit many generations of pupils and the entire Dulwich community for as many years to come.”
The project will transform the heart of the Dulwich College campus, providing new teaching facilities for Science and Information Technology, 21 teaching laboratories, five IT suites, communal spaces, an exhibition space with connecting walkways, housing the James Caird lifeboat, and a 240 seat auditorium.
Work on the exterior and roof will follow, to be completed by October.
Dulwich College is due to be completed in July 2016.
