Addressing, accounting for and managing environmental issues

Our team combines specialist knowledge in ecology, biodiversity, pollution control, air quality, archaeology, and climate adaptation to minimise our impact, protect local habitats, and enhance outcomes wherever we work.

Our in-house Environmental Team delivers through expertise, passion, and a deep respect for the natural world. We understand the intrinsic link between the built environment and the landscapes, habitats, and communities around it. That’s why we take a comprehensive approach to environmental management, supporting our Project teams and subcontractors throughout the entire project lifecycle, from concept to completion.

We’ve developed a robust system that ensures accountability, data integrity, and best-practice delivery across every project. By staying ahead of evolving regulations and providing targeted training, we equip our teams with the necessary tools to protect the environment and deliver excellence. Building great spaces never comes at the expense of the planet, and we’re committed to always building better.

Our commitment to our environment

Hear from our Group Environmental Manager, Elliott Barry, as he explains how we minimise environmental impact across every stage of a project. In this video, Elliott shares our hands-on approach to risk reduction, habitat protection, and the essential role our expert team plays in delivering environmentally responsible construction.

Material management involves effective procurement and disposal within construction contexts, and is critical to lowering environmental and economic impacts. Our dedicated team of environmental experts controls and optimises material use from project start to completion.

Groundwork is our most significant concern within this area, as it involves the handling of soil and aggregate. To lower our environmental impact, we create material management plans that forecast how materials are handled, reused, and disposed of.

This is exceptionally important when dealing with the reuse of excavated materials, as it ensures we plan and test the materials being disturbed on site, optimise usage, reduce environmental impacts, and contribute to the overall success of our projects.

Rocks and water

Water is a primary vector for pollution. It’s incredibly important that we monitor this in our projects. We monitor water during a build through sampling, adhering to environmental regulations, minimising pollution and managing water resources sustainably. We’re responsible, accountable and responsive to any contamination.

If required, we have several risk-mitigation strategies, including silt fencing and bunds that control runoff. Through effective monitoring, our team of environmental experts control water in practical ways. We always aim to eliminate anything that could contaminate local ecosystems.

Waste is one of the most considerable challenges the construction industry faces. Here, waste accountability is crucial to upholding our high environmental standards.

Under the Environmental Protection Act, we’re accountable for waste across our business through proper management practices. Critical to our responsibilities is the waste hierarchy, which prioritises prevention, reuse, recycling and minimises disposal, reducing waste and optimising resources.

We reiterate this hierarchy throughout our business with staff training and audits, which maintain accountability for the proper disposal of waste and documentation of waste transfers. By taking ownership through active communication and collaboration, we reduce environmental impacts and maintain our exceptional standards.

At McLaren, we are lucky to work in a diverse array of environments and communities. And our commitment to them is vital to everything we do. Engaging these stakeholders is critical to the overall success of our business, and we achieve this in several ways.

As part of the True Build Partnership, we’re dedicated to making the industry a better place and respecting the communities in which we work.

Beyond this commitment, we provide employees with two volunteering days a year, enabling them to give back to and engage with their passion projects.
