Social Value

Our commitment to communities

We believe our work should deliver a real, tangible impact beyond the buildings we create.

Our Social Value team is dedicated to enhancing the economic, social, and environmental wellbeing of the communities we serve across the UK. Through a planned and proactive approach, they ensure every project leaves a positive and lasting impact on local people.

We collaborate closely with customers, colleagues, and our supply chain to deliver tailored initiatives that go beyond contractual obligations. From apprenticeships and local employment opportunities to student site tours, work placements, and volunteering, these meaningful partnerships are at the heart of our efforts.

By providing our project teams with the right tools and resources, we empower them to make a genuine difference. Whether it’s improving outdoor spaces, supporting local events, or creating pathways into the construction industry, our mission is to ensure our presence in the community brings real benefit, pride, and sustainable impact.

Doing right by our communities

Hear from our Social Value team as they share how we deliver real, lasting impact beyond the build, highlighting how we create opportunities, support communities, and go beyond expectations to leave a positive legacy wherever we work.

The positive impact we make on communities gives us a sense of purpose. We appreciate that the needs and priorities of each local area are different, and a one-size-fits-all approach doesn’t work.

We take the time to understand the key needs of the community and engage with local people before developing a social value action plan – including everything from financial contributions and donations to volunteering with local charities and schools, as well as supporting local businesses.

Sourcing local suppliers and employees during a project is one of the most significant ways we secure wider social and economic benefits for the community. McLaren attends Meet the Buyer events, engaging with supply chains, networking, and discussing collaboration and opportunities.

Inspiring future generations means committing to long-term relationships with key primary, secondary, and tertiary education providers, raising awareness of the diverse and rewarding careers available within the construction industry.

Through initiatives such as school engagement, work experience placements, site visits and career talks, we aim to spark interest from an early age and provide clear, accessible pathways into the sector.

By encouraging individuals to join us directly or through our trusted supply chain partners, we create meaningful social value by supporting personal development, promoting inclusive opportunities, and helping to build a skilled, future-ready workforce.

We cherish being a welcome neighbour in every local area. Making value-add contributions to the community, and proactively minimising any disruption or inconvenience caused by our construction activities is always our goal.

Creating a positive perception of the construction industry involves registering all our sites with the Considerate Constructors Scheme, aiming for an average score of 40/50 (classified as excellent or above) across all projects, thereby demonstrating excellence and innovation in construction management.

We’ll actively minimise disruption on and around our sites, responding to complaints quickly and appropriately. We also collaborate with other industry leaders, sharing knowledge and publicly showcasing our work. It’s our way of leading by example, highlighting the positive impact construction can have on local communities.

Apprenticeships

Our well-established training department is available to all employees. We offer young people the opportunity to gain employment, while also achieving worthwhile qualifications. At the start of every project, we agree on targets and KPI’s for local labour and apprenticeships in accordance with National Skills Academy for Construction guidelines.

Combatting modern slavery

We act ethically and with integrity in all our business relationships, ensuring slavery and human trafficking is not taking place anywhere in our company or the supply chain. Thorough compliance with all relevant legislation, including the Immigration Act 2016, we’re absolutely committed to preventing human rights violations across entire programmes.

Considerate construction

As part of our commitment to people, community, and the planet, we register all McLaren sites with the Considerate Constructors Scheme (CSS). The CCS commits us to the Code of Considerate Practice, designed to encourage the best possible performance during all stages of work.
