McLaren Construction Midlands and North are proud to announce that Assistant Planner, Tommy Bordicott, was Highly Commended in the Young Apprentice of the Year category at last night’s 2025 Insider Midlands Young Professionals Awards.

Tommy joined McLaren Construction Midlands and North in August 2023 as a Planning Technician Apprentice and has since demonstrated exceptional technical ability, professionalism, and ambition across multiple disciplines including planning, MEP, design and operations.

His rapid development and strong performance on the Longwood Close project in Coventry, followed by his growing involvement on Plot 4, in Avonmouth, led to his promotion to Assistant Planner at just 18 years old.

Since beginning his apprenticeship, Tommy has completed his Level 3 Construction Support Technician qualification and is now undertaking Level 4 as he continues to strengthen his planning expertise. His development has been supported by McLaren’s Early Talent Advisor, Joanna Rose, and his training provider, T3 Training and Development.

Tommy has earned a reputation for his initiative, confident communication style, and ability to engage effectively with clients, colleagues, and supply chain partners. His clear and engaging presentation of the Longwood programme sequence has played a valuable role in informing client decision-making and strengthening stakeholder relationships.

Beyond his technical and project contributions, Tommy has also demonstrated leadership and community commitment, taking part in local school outreach to inspire future apprentices and helping to connect McLaren’s early talent network through an apprentice football tournament he organised.

Tommy’s achievement reflects McLaren’s continued investment in nurturing early talent and supporting the next generation of construction professionals. Apprentices play a vital role in developing a strong future workforce, and Tommy’s journey is a powerful example of what can be achieved through opportunity, commitment, and the right support.

The Insider Midlands Young Professionals Awards celebrate exceptional achievements by rising talent across the region. The Young Apprentice of the Year category recognises apprentices who have shown outstanding progress, technical skill, and impact early in their careers.

On receiving Highly Commended for the category, Tommy said: “This acknowledgment means a lot to me, and I’m really proud to be recognised among so many talented young professionals. McLaren has given me opportunities to learn, challenge myself, and contribute to real projects from day one. I’m grateful to everyone who has supported me, especially my mentor Joanna Rose, my colleagues at Longwood Close, and the wider McLaren team who’ve helped me grow so quickly.”

Joanna Rose, Early Talent Advisor at McLaren Construction, said: “Seeing Tommy recognised with Highly Commended for this regional award is incredibly rewarding for everyone who has supported his development. His determination to learn, his confidence when presenting, and his willingness to step outside his comfort zone make him a standout apprentice. He’s a fantastic role model for our early talent community and a brilliant example of what can be achieved through dedication and curiosity.”

Gary Cramp, Managing Director of McLaren Construction Midlands and North, said: “Tommy continues to impress us with his maturity, technical capability and drive to continually improve. His contribution to the Longwood Close project and his growing involvement on other schemes shows just how capable he is at such a young age. We’re extremely proud of Tommy’s achievements so far and look forward to supporting his continued progression within McLaren.”
